The first round of Intensive classes for PowerPlus Writing and Essay Writing was a huge success with lots of students and staff attending. The second round is sure to be very popular as well!

Seeking volunteers for chronic diseases & metabolic syndrome study
Researchers at Curtin are exploring diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk factors amongst four ethnic groups in Australia and are now recruiting volunteers. Eligible participants will receive free blood tests.
Participation involves completion of two questionnaires, blood tests and a DEXA test which will take approximately 2-3hrs.
Volunteers who meet the following criteria are invited to participate:
- Have a cultural background from Europe, China, India or Iran
- Have lived in Australia for at least 5 years
Participants must also display one or more of the following criteria:
- Waist circumference: >94 cm for males and >80cm for females
- Blood pressure: 130/85 or higher and/or taking medication
- Diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance
- History of high Triglycerides or Cholesterol abnormality

The Counselling & Disability Service is offering FREE WORKSHOPS during Semester 1, 2010. Subjects for both groups include relaxation and learning what contributes to good sleep.
Students can choose to look at overcoming procrastination, dealing with presentation anxiety, asssertive communication and managing exam anxiety. Staff can improve their disability awareness and the supports available.

Children aged 10-12 needed for physiotherapy study
Researchers at the School of Physiotherapy have National Health and Medical Research Council funding to conduct a project on electronic games and physical activity in children. We are currently recruiting and require children aged 10-12 years old.
- Participation in this study will take about 6 months.
- Our first visit to your house will take around 2 hours and consist of some simple tests.
- On the second visit we will set your child up with a randomly chosen condition - no electronic games, traditional electronic games or active electronic games.
- Each condition lasts for 2 months, and the first visit tests will be repeated at the end of each condition.
We are happy to come to your house after school or even weekends if need be. Although we will need to take the electronic gear back when the study finishes, there is a $50 gift voucher to reimburse your time and effort.

Seeking volunteers for study of boy’s jump and hop performance
Jumping and hopping are fundamental movement skills, and proper development of these skills is essential for sports performance.
Participation involves two sessions of jumping and hopping, with a 30-minute rest between. Participants only have to come in on one day, and testing will take approximately 1 hour. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.
Boys aged eight to twelve years are invited to participate.
Participants must not have any conditions which make physical activity difficult.
Ethics approval has been received (PT0144).

Greening Human Capital
A two-day International Conference on Developing Human Capital for Sustainable Economies will be held from 27-28 May, 2010 in the "green" city of Karlsruhe, Germany.
This event will bring together academia, policy makers, senior executives of public and private organisations, human capital practitioners, economists, members of international development agencies and other relevant stakeholders to discuss key emerging issues including: global warming and the emergence of the green economies; how is the transformation from high to low carbon economies impacting human capital management; and effective initiatives needed to develop and manage human capital for sustainable economies.
Further to the knowledge sharing on greening human capital; the upcoming event also provides an excellent networking opportunity with academia, members of international agencies, governmental and non-governmental institutions, senior corporate and hr executives, economists, sustainable development practitioners and other relevant stakeholders in Europe and beyond.

Seeking healthy volunteers for bone health study
Are you interested in your spinal and bone health?
We are currently recruiting participants for a study investigating the association between chronic low back pain and bone health. This case-control study is a collaborative effort between the School and other local and interstate research centres.
We are now recruiting controls – that is, individuals who DO NOT experience low back pain.
Participants will receive free:
- bone mineral density tests,
- blood tests for inflammatory markers,
- lumbar spine MRI scan,
- $50 reimbursement for travel expenses.
All physical tests are conducted at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (likely on a weekend day) and the study questionnaire can be completed at your leisure. Total participation time is approx 2hrs.
Volunteers who meet the following criteria are invited to participate.
- Medically healthy individual not taking prescription medication
- Non smoker
- No history of chronic (> 3 months) low back pain in last 5 years
- No history of bone conditions (eg osteoporosis)
- Age 30-60 years
- If male, greater than 1.7m tall and greater than 65kgs
- If female, greater than 1.6m tall and greater than 50kgs
